Funky Flowers Card for Mum

This gorgeous card requires a little bit of artistic flair to draw, cut-out and cover the ‘MUM’ lettering but once that is done the rest is simple to put together by building from the bottom layer up. This particular card was designed for a birthday occasion but it could just as easily be used for Mother’s day.

Items you will need to make this card:

  1. Square 5″ x 5″ card blank
  2. Some plain card & purple shiny / pearl paper
  3. Die-cut flower shapes
  4. Mini Flower & Daisy brads
  5. Sticky foam pads and 6mm double sided sticky tape
  6. Craft knife, pencil, ruler & cutting mat
  7. Decoupage/precision scissors

Directions:

On the plain card draw the individual letters to make the word ‘MUM’, using the ruler to measure each letter out (and draw the straight lines if necessary). The two Ms should be 3cm tall x 3cm wide and the U should be 3cm tall x 2.5cm wide, all of the letters should have a line width of approximately 6mm.

Using the scissors carefully cut the letters out. Next cover each letter with double sided sticky tape cut to size and peel of the backing sheet. Press the sticky side of the letter onto the back of the purple paper. Carefully cut round each letter so each one is now neatly covered in the paper. Put the letters to one side for now.

Stick several larger and some smaller flowers over the surface of the card blank leaving a section on the left for the mum lettering. We have used pattern printed flowers but if these are not available any flat die-cut flowers will work well, alternatively use punched flower & daisy shapes. Overlapping the flowers over the edge of the card blank makes a lovely effect as shown on our example card but you will need to make sure that flowers at the bottom of the card overlap to the same extent at regular intervals so the card still stands up straight. You will also need to make sure the card will either still fit in the envelope that came with the card blank, alternatively simply overlap the flowers slightly less or use a larger envelope with the card instead.

Start applying the next layer by sticking a few more flowers over gaps using sticky foam pads to raise them up a level.

Take three of the smaller flowers and four of the medium flowers and using a craft knife make a small incision in the centre of each one. Push through a matching coloured mini flower brad or a larger daisy brad and fold the prongs over on the back of the flowers. Stick these bradded flowers randomly over gaps or over the top of larger flowers using sticky foam pads to raise them up.

Finally using sticky foam pads on the back of the ‘MUM’ lettering, stick the letters down the blank space you left on the left hand side of the card overlapping the letters over the edges of some of the flowers.
