Snowman Childrens Project

It’s never too early to introduce children to crafts. It can be hours of entertainment for both you and them. This snowman project is a fantastic fun craft project for you to do with your child/children and looks really effective stood on a windowsill as a Christmas decoration.

Click on this link Snowman Template to download a free printable template that includes outlines of all of the shapes you need to make the snowman up.

You will need Adobe Reader to open the template file, if you do not have Adobe Reader you can download it free from this link to the official Adobe website: Adobe Reader Download.

Other items you will need:

  1. Plain white card (large enough for snowman body)
  2. Plain orange card (for snowman’s nose)
  3. Black card/paper for eyes, buttons & mouth
  4. Brightly coloured card (for snowman’s hat)
  5. Strong card (for making the stand such as from a cereal box)
  6. Printer & plain white printer paper to print the template sheet
  7. Cotton wool
  8. 17cm length of colourful craft ribbon
  9. 6mm Double sided sticky tap, craft glue and/or glue stick
  10. Pencil & scissors

How to make:

Print the template sheet onto an A4 sheet of plain white printer paper (you may need to adjust the margin/print settings for your printer). Cut out the shapes only cutting along the solid lines and then draw round the cut outs to transfer the shapes onto the various colours of card / handmade mulberry paper. Use the white card for the snowman body, the black handmade mulberry paper (or black card) for the eyes, buttons & mouth, the orange card for the nose, the strong cereal box card for the stand and the bright coloured card for the hat.

Stick a strip of 6mm double sided sticky tape across the top of the snowman’s head at an angle and then stick the hat to it.

Next shred some cotton wool into small pieces. Then spread a thin layer of glue or alternatively use a glue stick all over the body and head and stick the cotton wool evenly all over.

Snowman steps 1&2

Use craft glue or a glue stick to stick on the snowman’s eyes, mouth, nose and buttons (leaving room for the scarf at the top of the snowman’s body). Leave the snowman to one side for the glue to dry.

Snowman step 3

Once the glue has dried, turn the snowman over and stick the centre of the 17cm length of bright craft ribbon across the back of the snowman’s neck using a strip of 6mm double sided sticky tape.

Take the strong card stand shape and fold it in half, then fold the ends back the other way to create a flap on each end. The dotted lines on the template show where the folds should be made. Stick a strip of 6mm double sided sticky tape to each flap and then stick the stand to the back of the snowman lining the bottom of the stand up with the very bottom edge of the snowman. The sloping edge on the stand should be at the bottom.

Snowman steps 4 & 5

To finish the snowman off, wrap the ends of the ribbon scarf round to the front and cross them over. Use a small drop of craft glue to stick the ribbon together where the two sides cross over.

Blue/White Let it Snow Card

This ‘Let it snow’ Christmas card is very easy to make and the light blue and white colour scheme make a nice change from the more traditional Christmas colours.

Blue/White Let it Snow Card

Items you will need:

  1. Small square (125mm x 125mm) white card blank
  2. Some plain white card, plain white paper and plain medium blue card
  3. A Christmas pattern background paper
  4. Woodware super duper square craft punch
  5. Woodware huge square craft punch
  6. Woodware super snowflake craft punch
  7. 3cm white satin material snowflake embellishment
  8. Light Blue Craft Ribbon
  9. Printer & printable white paper for sentiment
  10. Hi-Tack original all purpose very sticky glue
  11. Sticky foam tape and double sided sticky tape
  12. Craft knife, pencil, eraser, ruler & cutting mat
  13. Paper trimmer (optional)
  14. Scissors

How to make:

Carefully measure and cut out a section of the Christmas pattern background paper to cover the front of the card blank. To save paper you can leave a 2cm uncovered margin on the left of the card blank as this will be covered by the white wavy border later. Use double sided tape on all four edges of the patterned paper and then stick it to cover the front of the card blank.

From the plain white card measure and cut out a strip of card 3.5cm wide x 12cm tall. On the right hand side of this strip of card use scissors to cut a wavy edge design.

On the same strip of card using a ruler and pencil make a mark at the following intervals (each one measured from the last) 5mm from the top, 2cm, 1.5cm, 4cm, 1.5cm and 2cm, the last mark should be roughly 5mm from the bottom of the card strip. All of the marks should be in a straight line about 1-1.5cm from the left hand edge. Using a craft knife make small holes at each mark twisting the knife to open the holes up slightly.

Cut a 17cm length of the light blue craft ribbon. Thread the ribbon in and out of the holes on the card strip starting from the back of the top hole. You should end up with the ends of the ribbon poking through the back of the top and bottom holes. Pull the ribbon through so the ends are roughly even in length, trim the ends and secure each one down with a strip of sticky foam tape making sure the tape does not stick out over the edges of the card strip. Apply another strip of foam tape to the centre of the card strip and then use the three foam pad sections to stick the card strip to the card blank so it is lined up with the very left hand edge and the wavy edge covers the edge of the patterned paper.

To finish the decorative ribbon strip, cut a 7cm length of the light blue ribbon and tie this around the centre of the threaded ribbon, once you have tied it, trim the ends to around 2cm in length.

Use the Super duper square craft punch to punch a square out of the plain blue card. Next use the Huge square punch to punch out a square out of the plain white paper.

Using double sided sticky tape around all four edges of the huge punched white paper square, stick it to the card blank approximately roughly positioned as shown in the picture. Next using sections of sticky foam tape stick the super duper punched blue card square in the centre of the white paper square.

Then use the super snowflake craft punch to punch out a snowflake from some of the plain white card. Use craft glue to attach the card snowflake to the centre of the blue card square. Then still using the craft glue attach the material snowflake embellishment to the centre of the card snowflake.

Finally to create the sentiment use your printer to print out the words ‘Let it snow’ in medium blue writing on white paper. The font we have used here is called Bradley Hand ITC and the font size used is 28. Use a paper trimmer or craft knife, cutting mat and ruler to cut round the wording so that it measures 6.25cm wide x 1.75cm high making sure the wording is central in the finished rectangle. Using double sided sticky tape, stick the sentiment about 1cm up from the bottom of the card blank and so it is aligned with the white/blue snowflake topped squares above.
